Overhead Triceps Extension
Also known as: Overhead extension, French press (standing), Dumbbell overhead triceps extension
An overhead elbow extension. The load drops behind the head, then the elbows straighten.
Cues
- Hold one dumbbell (or a bar) overhead with the elbows pointing up and the upper arms beside the head.
- Bend only at the elbows and lower the load behind the head until the triceps stretch.
- Keep the ribs down and the elbows from flaring wide.
- Extend until the elbows finish straight; the upper arms stay still.
Common mistakes
- Flaring the elbows so the shoulders take over.
- Arching the low back to get the weight up.
- Turning it into a press by letting the upper arms travel forward.
Safety
- Keep the ribs down. Stop if you feel sharp pain in the elbow or low back.
